Preparing For Your Family Photography Session

Family photography is a blast! However, it can sometimes be a bit stressful for the family, especially for Mom and Dad. When they’re feeling tense, it can come across in the photos.

As a family photographer, I’m thrilled to make this experience as stress-free as possible! Here’s a cheerful guide to ensure your family session is laid-back, relaxed, and filled with joy. Family photography is a blast! But sometimes it can be a bit stressful for the family, especially Mom and Dad. And it shows in the pictures when Mom and/or Dad are feeling tense.

Be Cool!

Exciting news! Gone are the days of rigid poses and forced smiles in family photography! Hooray!

Today, we embrace a more natural vibe in family photography, and it's so exciting! Don't get me wrong—I still aim for those stunning shots where everyone is looking and smiling at the camera. But here's the best part: if it doesn't happen immediately, we don't stress out or let it affect the rest of our session. Instead, we let the kids run around, take a quick five-minute break, and then give it another go. I've planned plenty of time for this in each of my family sessions, which brings me to my next point…

Length of Family Photography Session

While there is plenty of time for the kids to be kids, I do try to work quickly and my family photography sessions rarely last more than an hour. Even with some monkeying around.

Let the Kids

Sometimes the best shots are the unplanned ones! Candid photos often catch genuine moments with real smiles and emotions. So, when the kids are running around, I might trail behind and grab pics when I get the chance. I might suggest they run together or play ring around the rosie. Or I might just let them roam around while I take pictures. The idea is: We can totally roll with it.

Look Away

Let's keep it real, folks! We're on a mission to capture the true essence of your family—think less "say cheese" and more "say connection!" I want to see the sparks between you, your kiddos, and your partner, not between you and my camera. Seriously, my camera's not that charming! lol!

So, don't worry about looking away from my camera during your family photo session. Just look at your kids like you usually do. Hold their little cheeks and give them kisses. If they're not looking at the camera, just stay where you are and focus on them. Chat with them and interact while I do my thing. Just keep an eye on where the camera is so no one blocks anyone else's face. I'm always watching for this, but it's great if mom and dad are aware too, so they can adjust without much direction from me and keep the connection going.

The Best Time of Day for a Family Photography Sessnion

Timing is super important for photography, especially when you're shooting outdoors! I always try to schedule family photography sessions around an hour before sunset or right after sunrise. That's when the lighting is absolutely amazing. This time, known as the “golden hour,” gives the most gorgeous light and vibe to make your photos look perfect. Many families have their kids take a long nap on picture day, so they're not too cranky. Do whatever it takes to catch that golden hour light—you'll be glad you did! For families with young kids who need to hit the hay early, I suggest doing your photo shoots in the fall when the sun sets earlier.

Family Photography Location

Although location is important, it isn't my primary focus. My priority is to capture authentic moments of you all together, appreciating each other, without a heavy dependence on props. I choose locations that are not only beautiful but also provide plenty of space for us to move around and explore. Local parks are my favorites, but I'm always excited to find new spots. If you have a location in mind, please share it. If you're uncertain, don't worry—I'm more than happy to recommend some wonderful places.

What to Wear

Choose clothes that make you feel awesome and show off your personality. Instead of matching, try to coordinate your outfits. Click here to check out a Pinterest board I put together to help you coordinate clothes for your family photo session. Feel free to ask me for advice on any outfits you’re thinking about. Just give me a shout!

Jewel tones look awesome in photos! Just steer clear of neon colors and clashing patterns.

When to Schedule Your Family Photography Session

Feel free to drop me a message to see if I have any last-minute openings (sometimes I do), but it's always smart to book at least a few weeks ahead. This is especially true in late summer and fall. My schedule can fill up fast, and I really don't like having to turn people away!

After the Session

Your digital gallery will be delivered within 2-3 weeks following your session date. At that time, you will have the opportunity to place orders, download, and print your images.
